Okay so as the title implies this isn't the real "Blog" for the Advanced Over-Feeding Challenge, it's the Discussion Topic, I need time to think everything through and not just jump into it all like I did last time. Time to use my brain for something Razz

Advanced Over-Feeding Challenges are as far as I know new, and I'm probably the first one to do anything regarding them. Over-Feeding Challenges however are not something new, I've seen many people do them or at least discussing them before I ever even did one.

I did my First Over-Feeding Challenge long ago, in 2010! Which was with Dermestid beetles, not Mealworms. There isn't much "Transition" from Dermestids to Mealworms, but there is a lot of "little differences" between the two, for instance, Dermestids don't feed on Vegetable matter [or at least not my species!] where-as Mealworms can live almost exclusively on it.

Anyway enough back-story onto the real discussion!

Okay onto the real discussion:

Food Goals
Every Over-Feeding Challenge I've done has had a "Food Goal" which is usually in Number form [most common form is Pieces in Counting or P.I.C.] this will still hold true for this Advanced Over-Feeding Challenge, however, just for the dry foods. I'm unsure of how to count or calculate the "Produce Wastes".

Our food Goal for this Advanced Over-Feeding Challenge is 1000+ Pieces in Counting [P.I.C.] which I know may seem "Large" at first but trust me this isn't a "Large" Over-Feeding Challenge by any-means! It's more of a Test since I've never personally done anything like this with a Mealworm Colony, let alone take the time to "Figure it all out" like I'm doing right now Smile

That's it for this part of the Discussion, I'll be talking about the All Important System next!

The All Mighty System!
An Over-Feeding Challenge in my books is only as good as the System I'm using! So unlike my first initial plan of using a Flow Through, I'm going to be just going old school with a very large bin! I've noticed that I had a size issue with my Current Flow-Through, which would eventually hinder my ability to continue adding in Food Wastes and such. I don't want a mold problem either as well as other issues. Here are a few just in case you were wondering!

Escape!
Yep that's right, since the container was "broken" It had a major flaw, it was hard to move without the lid coming off and that wouldn't be fun to drop or worse have someone else get into! This is probably the biggest issue I had!

Mold/Not enough Air Flow!
The bin had limited space, I couldn't add too many "Vent Holes" as needed. Lots of beetles also produce lots of humidity, add that with a ton of food and that's a recipe for mold, and even "Pests" like Grain Mites, not something I'd like to deal with during an Over-Feeding Challenge [things pick up fast sometimes and before you know it your dealing with too many problems and have to can the whole thing!]

With the larger bin, I'm hoping to just add a big vent to the lid, or at least several small ones, all around! With the larger size I can also add in more hides, which in turn will leave more room for the beetles! It will cut down on losses due to them being in close contact! They do like their own space sometimes!

I'll provide at least a few Pictures of this all when I'm doing it. Might even just make a video for Vidme and post it here as well!
